All pet owners SHOULD NOT leave home without a first aid kit, for both animal or humans! To many things happen in the field, and having one of those kits could save life. I have had dogs ripped open by barb wire, etc....etc..... Check out the link below and consider getting one! Trying to make a kit is a pain in the butt and takes to much energy and time considering that for a minimum price you can just order one!
Just to back up what you are saying here. One of the members of our hunt club almost lost his dog last season on an old farm that we hunt. His Britney followed a bird into the farmers old dump and cut his limb pretty bad. Pete thought he was going to lose his dog because of the blood loss, but managed to slow the bleeding enough to get him to a vet. $1800 dollars later and missing one season and his dog is back enjoying the hunt.
I started carrying a kit in the back of my hunting coat. Used it two weeks ago on Kenzie when she ripped the tip of her ear in two on some brambles. These dogs hunt hard and nothing seems to stop them when on a hot scent. So please take Dave's advice and like American Express, don't leave home without it.
I was surprised to find out how many hunters do not carry saline in their vehicle while hunting. I use it to flush my dogs eyes during our break and a second time when we get home. You will be amazed at the amount of dirt and seeds that can be washed out of their eyes. I also follow up with a couple drops of Visine.
