This is Pally, she arrive Sunday a week ago from Montana(Kraig Glazier). On Friday I made a blood trail with deer blood and the prize was the bone , she trailed perfectly and found the bone on the first try. Amazing little dogs.

Good job Chris.  I am amazed every time I run a blood trail with my pup.  These dogs can REALLY smell!

Tomorrow I'll drag a bird through the woods, that will probably be a little harder. We'll see.

She might be a little young for a bird. She'll probably try to eat it.  It is easier to train new tasks than break bad habits.

I started dragging a pheasant wing across my hardwood floors and later out in the lawn when my pup was 2 1/2-3 months old.  He was very good at finding it.  He didn't chew the wing up too much because I made him retrieve it back to me.  He has retrieved a few birds (pigeons), and hasn't seemed to be too hard mouthed.  We are going on a preserve bird hunt in a couple of weeks to give him the first taste of the real thing.  I can't wait to see how he does.

If you firmly attach the wing to an object that maximizes the pups mouth capacity, there is little chance he can eat it, it is too big. Dave is correct about not starting bad habits. I like using goose wings for pups, as the tuff feathers are not as tempting or as easy eaten.

Introducing young dogs to retrieving real birds with pond ducks is a good idea. Ducks are too big for a dog to swallow and they cannot eat it in the water. You have more control of the situation.

Thats´right!

Unfortunately some hunters wait too long until they start working
with the dogs.

Most puppies have the ability and the will to work.
